Pragmatics and Semantics
Many of the current philosophical approaches to pragmatics focus on semantics. Brandom, for example is focused on the significance of words (albeit from a pragmatic perspective).
Others take an approach that is more holistic to pragmatics, such as relevance theory, which seeks to explore how an utterance is understood by the hearer. This view tends to ignore other aspects of pragmatics such as epistemic discussions about truth.
What is pragmatism?
Pragmatism is a philosophical approach that offers an alternative to continental and analytic philosophy. Charles Sanders Peirce was the first to introduce it and William James extended it. Later, Josiah Royce developed the philosophy. It had a profound impact on the areas of inquiry ranging from theology and philosophy to philosophy of science as well as ethics, politics and philosophy of language. The pragmatist tradition continues grow.
The pragmatic principle is at the heart of classical pragmatism. It is a principle that clarifies the meaning of hypotheses via their ‘practical implications’ or their implications for the experience of specific situations. This leads to an epistemological perspective that is a form of ‘inquiry-based epistemology’ and an anti-Cartesian interpretation of the rules that govern inquiry. Early pragmatists, however, generally disagreed on the issue of whether pragmatism ought to think of itself as a philosophy of science that focuses on a monism of truth (following Peirce), or a broad-based alethic pluralism (James and Dewey).
A major concern for philosophers of the pragmatist tradition is how to understand pragmatickr knowledge. Rorty is a pragmatist who is skeptical of any notions of knowledge founded on ‘immediate experience’. Others, like Peirce and James, are sceptical of the theory of correspondence that claims to be true, according to which true beliefs are those that reflect reality in a ‘correct’ way.
Other pragmatism-related issues include the relationship between reality and beliefs, the nature of human rationality, the importance of virtues and values and the significance of life. Pragmatists have also developed a broad range of methods and ideas in fields such as semiotics, philosophy of language, philosophy of religion as well as ethics, philosophy of science, and theology. Some, such as Peirce and Royce are epistemological relativists, whereas others believe that such relativity is a serious misguided idea. The latter half of the 20th century saw a revival of interest in classical pragmatics. This led to a myriad of new developments. These include a “near-side” pragmatics that is focused on the resolution of ambiguity, indexicals, demonstratives, and anaphors as well as a “far-side” pragmatics that analyzes the semantics in discourses.
What is the relationship between what is said and what is done?
Semantics and Pragmatics can be seen as being at opposite ends of the continuum. On the side that is near, semantics are considered and pragmatics is situated on the other side. Carston, for example claims that there are at a minimum three general types of modern pragmatics: those who view it as a philosophy based on the lines of Grice; those who focus on its interaction with grammar; and those who are concerned with the interpretation of utterances. Near-side pragmatics encompasses issues such as the resolution of unclearness and the use of proper names indexicals, demonstratives, anaphoras and presupposition. It is also thought to cover some issues involving definite descriptions.
What is the relation between semantics and pragmatics?
Pragmatics is the study of meaning in the context of language. It is a subset of linguistics and looks at the way people use words to convey different meanings. It is often compared with semantics, which looks at the literal meaning of words within sentences or in larger chunks of discourse.
The relationship between pragmatism, semantics and their interrelationship is complicated. The main distinction is that pragmatics takes into account other aspects besides literal meanings of words, which includes the intended meaning and context that a statement was made. This gives a more nuanced understanding of the meaning of a sentence. Semantics also considers the relationship between words, whereas pragmatics is more focused on the relationships between the interlocutors and their contextual features.
In recent decades, the neopragmatism movement has been heavily focusing on metaphilosophy as well as the philosophy of language. It has left behind the value theories and metaphysics of classical pragmatism. However, some neopragmatists are trying to create an ethics that draws from classical pragmatism’s ideas of pragmatics and experience.
Charles Sanders Peirce, William James and others were among the first to create classical pragmatism. Both were influential thinkers who wrote a number books. Their works are still popular to this day.
Although pragmatism can be a good alternative to the analytic and continental philosophical mainstream, it isn’t without criticism. Some philosophers, like have claimed that deconstructionism isn’t a truly new philosophical approach and that pragmatism merely represents an expression.
In addition to these critics, pragmatism was challenged by technological and scientific advances. For instance, pragmatists struggled to reconcile their opinions on science with the evolution of evolutionary theory, which was developed by a non-pragmatist, Richard Dawkins.
Despite these difficulties, pragmatism continues its growth in its popularity throughout the world. It is a third option to analytic and Continental philosophical traditions, and has many practical application. It is a growing field of study. Many schools of thought have evolved and incorporated aspects of pragmatism within their own philosophy.
